Daughters of the new revolution
Four days following their "Convention" fashion show,
Art Fiend Foundation sponsored
yet another event, this time in support of painter Mika Machida.
Machidas work identifies with the spirit of the stage
of womanhood known as "daughterhood": the journey
every female takes in transforming from an adolescent stage
to a more mature, womanly state of being. Identifying with
the loneliness and isolation evoked through the metamorphosis
from dependency to a more secure, nurturing state, subjects
she uses include girls and horses. The photo realistic model
she depicts on collage-style paintings resembles a woman in
a fetal position slowly opening up, through a series of canvases,
as if from the womb into the world. The horses are a subject
she studies from afar as being independent, yet a further
glance into their eyes depicts a more lonely, longing stare,
not unlike a coming of age woman.
Currently studying graphic design at FIT, she considers her
art to be not totally unlike her graphic work, and incorporates
ideas from one field to the other.
