Showcased in a former art supply store on
Rivington, Convention by Art Fiend Foundation was a casual
gathering of a tight knit downtown art community featuring
their wearable art pieces. Individuality and one-of-a-kind
details dominated the looks worn by the actual creators
and their friends as they mingled with the audience. Unconventional
shapes layered with denim and trouser pants, jersey cutout/
braided tops, deconstructed skirts, homespun accessories,
raw finishes, d-i-y painted graphics and prints, hand
constructed corsets styled with netting; these were just
some of the components evident in the show, representing
over 40 designers and their takes on modern/ primeval
dressing. Models sported name tags explaining what they
wore and who made them in a succinct "Hello my name isÉ"
fashion. Also sporting the clothes, a hippie new age beatnik
orchestra played softly in the background, adding to the
atmosphere of the closeness of the community. The uniqueness
of the garments and the crowd was a sure indication that
designer looks are definitely not a concept that this
crowd embraces, and one would rather look odd/ charming
than have the shoe of the season. |
