Seagull
Screaming Kiss Her Kiss
Her Future or No Future
2001 Trattoria/Polystar
Future or No Future? Definitely a future, with a bit of an edge.
Nonstop electric guitar heavy tracks on this album. Here's another
future that keeps looping it's head into history: New York/Tokyo
Rock Hybrids. Yumiko Ono of Buffalo Daughter sings back-up and
plays moog on a couple of tracks.

Mean Machine
(Chara, Yuki, Ayui, Chiwaki, Yukarie)
CREAM
2001 Epic Records Japan
Japan's alternative female pop stars have teamed-up to form
Mean Machine. With a name like Mean Machine and the debut album
name like "CREAM" you have to expect a rain of electric guitar
sounds with an occasional vocal screech. This first female all-star
rock'n' roll that I have ever heard, but it's questionable whether
they intend to stay together or they've just created the band
for fun, in the later case better not get hooked.

Aphex Twin
drukqs
2001 London-Sire / Warp
Some people think Aphex Twin is a bit difficult to listens
to, on the flipside techno extremist think he might be too
tame with his use of digestible beats. I've been eagerly awaiting,
for the past to years, for something new from Richard D. James
a.k.a. Aphex Twin. With his double album, it was worth the
wait. My advice for listening to Aphex twin is not to think
about how hard or easy his music is, but rather how you decode
it, take it apart in your head. "drukqs", I'd say is encrypted
music made for cracking. "drukqs" = drug use? whatever.

Hope Sandoval
& The Warm Inventions
Bavaria Fruit Bread
2001 Rough Trade
Soon after Mazzi Star called it quits, people were anxiously
awaiting the comeback of Hope Sandoval, lead singer of the band.
But hopes of them reuniting were bleak, much like the hopes
that My Bloody Valentine would get back together. Now, many
years after, CD's having replaced all those audio tapes, Hope
Sandoval has gotten together with Colm O Ciosoig, to produce
the new harmonica & glockenspiel mellow music for this millennium.

Wagon Christ
Musipal
2001 Ninja Tune
"Now the premise of this album is very very simple: A.)To
listen to messages of soul with a solid beat. B.)To find a passing
spaceship and get rescued by it. C.)To dance actually, dance
business, the highest definition ever achieved in recording."
I think it's al of the above, except maybe B. Luke Vibert, makes
it all sound very, very simple, while keeping to music rich
and full of colorful samples and beats. Those are the best things
in life.
